goudron
The post electro music project of visual artist Ron Zakrin, Goudron is a one man army,
armed to the teeth with an arsenal of vintage synthesizers, drum machines, and circuit-
mangled electronics that he modifies himself. The jams unleashed from this Detroit native
compel one's body to hurl through space at critical velocity, and will take listeners on a
contemplative ride through a post apocalyptic world.

The music of Goudron will hook, bruise, molest and caress you,  evoking memories of

rebellious youth and love gone bad. Charged with emotional depth, exciting mood swings

and continual drive, Goudron makes music that is wholly synthetic, while harnessing the

 energy of pure Detroit rock.

Goudron  originally appeared on Ersatz Audio, a Detroit label founded by the members of

Adult. After the label shut down operations Goudron found a new home at Interdimensional-

Transmissions, headed by Brendan M. Gillen of Ectomorph.

The first pressing of Stiletto is packaged in a special sleeve, hand-screened by Goudron himself.

RELEASE DATE: MAY 18, 2004 (EZCD-30)
The music on "Raw Voltage" is electronic, warm and full of momentum. Goudron is a modern craftsman of synthesis, structure and song. His music seems choreographed to a film, breaking down, starting up, fluctuating and adhering to rules that make his music sound like no other. His unique 'sound' comes in part from the fact that he modifies a lot of his gear himself; it also comes in part from the fact that he knows his machines inside and out. Watching him live, he masterfully manipulates analog synths without schematics - an amazing skill to those that truly know vintage analog gear.

Goudron is Detroit artist and musician Ron Zakrin. "Raw Voltage" is Goudron's first full length album after his two previously successful 12" releases on Ersatz Audio. 5 of the songs here on this CD were previously released on 12" vinyl releases on Ersatz Audio entitled "Horses & Chariots" and "Civil Symmetry". And like his previous 2 releases, this album also features the artwork of Mr. Zakrin.

"Raw Voltage" spans over two years worth of song writing, this album is a selection of the best of the best. Over 30 songs were compiled together to bring you this extraordinary 11 song album. Beginning with the confrontational "Art School Fuckheads" and ending with the beautifully somber "Tired", "Raw Voltage" undulates like an unforgiving tidal wave. "Raw Voltage" seamlessly flows between instrumental and vocal songs as well, because Goudron's instrumentals sound as thought the synths are speaking. The title itself "Raw Voltage" reflects the albums continual percussive push, its buzzing analog synths and of course it's part homage to another Detroit musical legend...

Goudron delivers an album of massive emotional depth, exciting mood swings and continual drive, creating a record that grows on the listener with every passing song.

RELEASE DATE: APRIL 6, 2004 (EZ-029)
Goudron is back with his second 12" on Ersatz Audio entitled "Civil Symmetry" featuring 5 new songs presented in a one-of-a-kind jacket. The jackets for "Civil Symmetry" were created by hand using the laborious technique of block printing, then hand numbered and signed by the artist. Owning this stunning record is also owning an original work of art, limited to only 1,000 copies. Goudron is Detroit musician and artist Ron Zakrin.

"Civil Symmetry" is classic Ersatz Audio, filled with incessant drum machines, rich analog synthesizers and arresting structures. This EP is rich in perpetual tonality shifts with a thick atmosphere of unwavering purpose. Side A starts with the unfailing drive of "Civil Symmetry" and "Rumble Queen", ending with the playfully catchy "All The Chaps". Side B continues the assertive thrust of Side A with "Yellow #5" and concludes the record with the horror ballad "Run" - a personal favorite of the label. Symphonic strings, complex rhythms, impenetrable layers and effortlessly delivered melodies come together to create the unforgettable sound of Goudron. "Civil Symmetry" is honest, hard-working and authentic electronic music. With sincerity waning in contemporary music, Goudron is a breath of fresh air. Anticipate restitution.

RELEASE DATE: OCT. 29, 2002 (EZ-021)
Programming Spontaneity: Complicating Simplicity.

Ersatz Audio is proud to deliver the long overdue initial 12" release from Detroit's Goudron. First introduced on the Ersatz Audio compilation "Misery Loves Company" earlier this year, Goudron now delivers a new 4 song EP of contrived impulses, moving thematically from the harsh to the refined. The "Horses & Chariots" EP provokes contradictory moods, a perfect reflection of twenty-first century living.

Goudron is Ron Zakrin, Detroit artist and musician. He is represented by Detroit's acclaimed Cpop Gallery for his paintings, and now by the edgy Ersatz Audio label for his music. Known to most Detroiters as Ghost200 (his preceding musical guise), Zakrin has been playing live since 1996. Ghost200's first show was with Le CAR in Detroit. With his long live show history to his credit, Goudron's first EP sounds more experienced than most artists' initial release. Complex rhythms, made from machines customized by Zakrin himself, seem to fall out effortlessly into unique patterns, evenly complimenting the emotionally charged instrumental tracks. "Horses & Chariots" comes complete with an original Zakrin designed 12" jacket. Goudron's dichotomous compositions, wavering between the warm and the cruel, the calculated and the improvident, fit perfectly askew in the lineage of Ersatz Audio.

"Great new wave electro-punk from Detroit. Wicked, deceptively subtle stuff..." -Jockey Slut

"Responsible for one of the best tracks on the Ersatz Misery Loves Company comp... with angular synth lines and tuff-ass bass beats, he's a welcome addition to the Ersatz family." -Vice

"When it breaks down, the people in the club are going to scream! This is tight. I really love the bass line. If I had a set between 2 and 5 [am], I'd probably drop this around 3."
-Felix Da Housecat / Remix Magazine

mods
Here are some  electronics that have gone under the knife and lived to tell the tale.

mods: Moogslayerfilter+FM 800 mod created by Atomsmasher, 12/24dB switchable filter,
noise mod, noise modulation mod, ext. audio in mod. Internal feedback mod.

I call this the Hellbent Bastard, it's a roland tr 505 bent all the way to hell, and to add
insult to injury I added a toy keyboard circuit and cross modded them. I rebuilt the
exterior pretty much from the ground up, I melted the original buttons so I had to start
there. Where I ended was not foreseen, but everything actually works! As far as looks

go, once underway I set my sights on a mid 70's IBM aesthetic.

This is the Gakken SX150, a new analog synth from japan. It comes in a kit and requires
assembly, but it's easily done. I added cv-gate inputs, a new path from the LFO to the
filter, some coarse and fine tuning knobs, and there is room for more. I originally added
a low cost function generator which had three waveform outputs, sine, square, and saw.
It sounded amazing as it modulated the waveform of the oscillator, but I done kilt it.

Ghost 200
    (before Goudron)

This Alphie was my first successful project, it was done back in 1997, and had a low fi
pitch-shifter called a megamouth warper and I added a feedback knob and audio inputs.
It made drum machines sound way killer. I had no idea what I was doing - what is that
microphone doing in there? But it worked, and I gigged with it for years before it got
kilt.

This Alphie had an oscillator circuit that was originally a toy phone sound maker. It was
unstable as it reacted to moisture the way a theramin reacts to the magnetic feild, so I
wrapped it in tape after I added cv gate and rough/ fine tuning knobs. I used to play solos
on it and the eyes lit when it was triggered. Circa 1997.

This Alphie had a modified flanger and a phasor installed, plus the beat machine seen on
the front. This was an essential part of my rig for years. It too got itself kilt. R.I.P.

This  one is in progress.
